Flying the Freak Flag
Nancy Smith, director of Frequent Flyers Productions Aerial Dance Theater, is the only company member who was even alive during the 1960s, but that hasnt stopped her crew of far-out choreographers and high-flying dancers from tackling the turn on, tune in, drop out decade in their new show, Fabulous Freaky Flyers.
We started with the music, Smith says. Whether you were alive during that decade or not, most of this music is familiar, and its so compelling. So many things happened during that decade that were still feeling the effects of today or maybe should be feeling more heavily and we wanted to try to address it through choreography. I was a teenager in the 60s, and I realized I still have a lot of anger and emotion from that time of my life. Its been really intense for me to go back and relive it with my dancers.
Smiths own work in the show includes a solo performance to Its a Beautiful Day, a Vietnam War study with a Jimi Hendrix sound-track, and a Pink Floyd piece she premiered in Boulder at the 2010 Aerial Dance Festival. Two new choreographers will debut their first work for the company, including nineteen-year-old Josh Rigos aerial interpretation of the Stonewall Riots.
The Flyers make a rare appearance outside of Boulder this weekend at the Lakewood Cultural Center, 470 South Allison Parkway, with 8 p.m. performances tonight and tomorrow and a 2 p.m. Sunday matinee. For tickets, $23, and more information, call 303-245-8272 or visit www.frequentflyers.org.
