In the independent nation of Boulder, the foodies take all things raw, slow, organic, free-range and homegrown just a little too seriously. But if you brush away all the posturing about where your salad came from and what the cow ate before it became a steak, there is some sense in eating local.
Although trendy Organic Orbit, 1200 Yarmouth Avenue in Boulder, has a reputation for food snobbery, you can't fault chef Michael Farrel for promoting some of the real heroes in this edible power play. The area farmers who produce our bounty of fresh, green goods will be in the spotlight this month when the eatery celebrates National Organic Harvest Month with a series of weekly Organic Orbit Farm Dinners. This week, Saguache-based Green Earth Farm, which specializes in gourmet potatoes and quinoa, will be featured, so expect those delicious starches to figure in the meal. Future showcases include organic and heirloom fare from Longmont's Full Circle and Pachamama farms and Boulder's Abbondanza Farm.
