The Longmont Museum and Cultural Center has been toying with presenting a bicycle exhibit for a while. “We thought now was a great time. We were able to fit it in, and it’s a good time of year to go bicycling,” notes research and information curator Erik Mason.

That’s how Bicycles! 150 Years of Gears got its start; the exhibit opens today with more than forty bicycles lent by private collectors, bike shops and the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame. “We’ve got an 1869 ‘boneshaker,’” Mason reveals. “It’s got iron bands instead of tires. And the newest is a 2010 cutting-edge mountain bike made in Golden. And we’ve got everything in between: racing bikes, leisure bikes, novelty bikes, everything.”

Attendees should expect to learn a lot about the history of biking, and not just the early years of bicycles. “A lot of these bikes are one-of-a-kind,” Mason adds, “and you’re not going to see this gathering of bikes anywhere else.”

The museum is at 400 Quail Road in Longmont, and you can catch the exhibit through July 3. Admission is $5 for adults and $2 for kids; visit www.ci.longmont.co.us or call 303-651-8374.
