Get Snow Dazed in Vail
Vail’s week-long Snow Daze celebration kicks off today with an after-dark party in the town’s Ford Park. Things will really heat up later in the week as the ski resort counts down to its fiftieth birthday, which will be celebrated on Saturday with a giant bash and fireworks display in Mountain Plaza. In the meantime, a three-day concert series will provide plenty of entertainment: The Shins and the Divine Fits take the stage Thursday ($29.50), while Michael Franti and Spearhead and Nic Cowan and the Remedy play on Friday ($39.50), and Wilco and Nathaniel Rateliff close out the party on Saturday ($39.50).
Friday is also the day to catch the free world premiere of Vail: The Rise of America’s Iconic Ski Resort at 5:30 or 7:30 p.m. at the Vail Marriott Mountain Resort; the film features fifty years of ski footage by local filmmaker Roger Cotton Brown.
“We’re exposing Vail’s real soul by telling the story of the people who started the place,” says Brown. “That history cuts through any impression of glitz and money people may have when they think of Vail. Yes, there are a lot of big, fancy hotels in Vail now, but behind it all are a lot of very ordinary people who were essentially ski bums who saw their dreams realized.”
