Get Wimpy at Borders
If you know the names Greg Heffley, Roderick, Rowley and Fregley, then you know about the mesmerizing combination of snarky, sometimes off-color stories and adolescent drawings that make up the immensely popular Diary of a Wimpy Kid series. The four books which are aimed at the seven-to-twelve-year-old crowd but seem to attract adults as well exploded in popularity this year, inspiring a movie of the same name, a do-it-yourself book, merchandise and even some knockoff books.
The eagerly anticipated fifth book, Diary of a Wimpy Kid 5: The Ugly Truth, in which anti-hero Greg has to come to grips with his weird friend Rowley, comes out today, and the Borders bookstore chain is holding parties to celebrate and sell the purple-covered books (each Wimpy Kid installment is a different color).
Written in the first person in a diary style, the books were penned by author Jeff Kinney. And although Kinney isnt scheduled to be in Denver, all of the Denver-area Borders will feature games, a book discussion, art activities and giveaways.
We always expect a big turnout with any Diary of a Wimpy Kid event, says Michael Archuleta, general manager of the Borders store at Park Meadows, 8557 Park Meadows Center Drive in Lone Tree. Borders has always stood behind this series, and we like to reward kids who are reading. It should be pretty successful.
The release parties start at 6 p.m. at all six Borders locations. For more information, call your nearest store or go to www.borders.com and search for events.
