Just a week after his latest book, Where Men Win Glory: The Odyssey of Pat Tillman, hit the new-release racks, Jon Krakauer, the prodigal son of Boulders climbing scene and the countrys premier mountaineering journalist, is returning to Colorado.
Since publishing Into the Wild, Krakauer has focused his storytelling talents on the often tragic nature of the human condition when pushed to the extreme, and this book is no exception. An All-Pro safety with the Arizona Cardinals, Pat Tillman had the makings of an NFL star. But after 9/11, he put his football career on hold and joined the U.S. Army Rangers. His death in 2004 while on patrol outside the village of Sperah, Afghanistan, was made even more tragic when it came to light that not only was Tillman killed by friendly fire, but that the Army may have tried to cover it up.
Krakauer will sign and discuss the book tonight at 7:30 p.m. at the Tattered Cover LoDo, 1628 16th Street. The event is co-sponsored by the Boulder-based nonprofit Veterans Helping Veterans Now; a silent auction for signed first editions of Krakauer's books will take place to benefit that organization, with the author matching the winning bid with a personal donation. Tickets to hear Krakauer and to reserve a spot in the signing line will be available to the first 275 people who buy a copy of Where Men Win Glory, beginning at 9 a.m. on September 15 at any Tattered Cover location.
