Growing Green

Sprout City Farms manages the nation's first on-site farm-to-cafeteria growing space, the Denver Green School Community Farm, which provides kids with learning opportunities and fresh (organic!) food year-round. And any farmer can tell you it's not easy to make hay when the sun isn't shining, so think of the second annual Sprout Down as your chance to shed some sun -- and some funds -- on the program.

"We have an anonymous donor who's going to match everything we raise, so this really is our biggest fundraiser of the year," says Sprout City's Meg Caley.

Sprout Down will feature live music from Fingers of the Sun and Steve Rothenberg, speakers, performances by students and a silent auction (offering such items as a new bicycle or weekend getaway in the mountains for eight people, as well as local, handcrafted goods). Best of all, the big winners are the kids. "They have been introduced to new foods that they hadn't had before," notes Caley. "There's one sixth-grader now whose favorite vegetable is a turnip. I think that change in the kids is the most powerful, but people in the community who live right across the street and see the farm every day appreciate how it's beautified the space, and at our CSA pickup and weekly farm stand, people from the neighborhood and people from the school interact at those places. It's really bringing people together across the community."
