Boulder’s Frequent Flyers aerial dance school and company is already held in high regard. But every August, director Nancy Smith elevates the program to an international level with the two-week International Aerial Dance Festival, bringing master dancers and choreographers from around the world to join an already distinguished student body. “You won’t be able to see these performances anywhere else,” she says. “This group of artists might be blocked together in performances only one time.”
This weekend’s Aerial Dance Festival Showcase at the Dairy Center for the Arts is a case in point: With a big nod to contemporary trends in aerial dance, Smith’s own Frequent Flyers troupe and other fest instructors — including pole and contortion artist Rebecca Starr; Sam Tribble, master of the Cyr wheel and traveling rings; and local aerial burlesque artist Kim Townsend (aka Midnite Martini, winner of the Miss Exotic World Queen of Burlesque 2014 title) — will wow their audiences with just such one-of-a-kind performances. “Sam’s performance is worth the price alone,” Smith enthuses. “His work is just gorgeous; he works with such a sense of balance and grace and strength and musicality.” And she recommends coming back next week for the new Cabaret Showcase, during which talented students, many of whom have already reached professional stature, will perform with a vaudevillian sense of humor.
Catch the ADF showcase tonight at 8 p.m., tomorrow at 2 and 8 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m.; the cabaret show starts at 8:30 p.m. Friday, August 15. Both programs are at the Dairy Center for the Arts, 2590 Walnut Street in Boulder; admission is $20 to $25 this weekend, $12 on August 15. Reserve tickets and get more information at frequentflyers.org.
Fridays, Saturdays, 8 p.m.; Saturdays, Sundays, 2 p.m. Starts: Aug. 8. Continues through Aug. 10, 2014
