Homecoming King

Bill Amundson, the unique Denver artist/satirist who absconded to Wisconsin a year ago to be near family, left a wicked hole in the local art scene when he left — a hole that could only be filled by his own intricate drawings, each crammed onto the paper in a babel of detailed crosshatch, aphorisms, minutiae, advertising slogans, cultural criticism and ideas. But as a resident artist at Plus Gallery, he keeps a home fire burning here, and it’ll grow to a bonfire tonight when his solo exhibition, Blurred Vision: New Drawings by Bill Amundson, opens with a reception from 6 to 9 p.m. It’s certain to be filled to the rafters with old friends and curious collectors, and Plus director Ivar Zeile thinks they’ll all be pleased with what they see.

“Technically, this would be Bill’s first real solo exhibition as a mature artist,” Zeile enthuses. “His works of the last ten years have grown outside the realm of what most people in Denver are used to: They’ll expect to see what they’ve come to love and revere about him, and instead they’ll see an even greater set of work. These are such dense and detailed pieces that he’s honed in the last few years.” That would include the indescribable piece of political comment, “Tower of Sarah,” and other drawings and works that can only be described as monumental, in stature and in size.

See Blurred Vision through December 3; on November 4, Amundson will also deliver one of his famous gallery talks with props. That not-to-miss moment unfolds at 7 p.m. and is free. Plus Gallery is at 2501 Larimer Street; for information, go to www.plusgallery.com or call 303-296-0927
Wednesdays-Saturdays. Starts: Oct. 28. Continues through Dec. 3, 2011
