Homemade by Hand

Now that the Outdoor Handmade Homemade Market is in its third year, it’s easy to forget the event’s humble origins — as a bartering party for crafty folk. “It came out of somebody’s living room and back yard,” notes Handmade Homemade’s Stephen Toma, “and it was an opportunity for people to build some wealth within their own little community of friends and family. Then the popularity built to where they needed a real venue because other people started to become really interested in participating.”

The market’s success has a lot to do with its accessibility, Toma believes. “It’s a semi-charitable organization: We only charge $20 for the vendors to participate, which counters what a lot of other markets are doing with large entry fees,” he notes. “We want the vendors to have the opportunity to vend. A lot of them are vending for the first time, so you see a lot of makers who you don’t normally see in the circuit. And when we cram people into these venues, put them close together with live music and food, the whole atmosphere is something that people really enjoy participating in.”

Today’s market, which runs from 1 to 7 p.m., will be hosted by Youth on Record, 1301 West Tenth Avenue, a location that’s close to both B-cycle and light-rail stations. Admission is a suggested $5 donation; visit for information.
