In A Tale of Two Cities, woe came to all those whom the villainess, Madame Defarge, encoded into her ubiquitous knitting, which never left her side. Click, click. Creepy. But there is something internal about the act of knitting that can, in better times, be put to positive use in ways both calming and social in nature.

So be relieved: There’s nothing the least bit evil about sitting around the Denver Central Library’s homey Fresh City Lounge, 10 West 14th Avenue Parkway, during Madame Defarge’s Knitting Salon, a weekly needle-knockin’ where knitters and needleworkers can chew the fat, share tips and get help from an expert, should the need present itself, every Monday from 5 to 7:30 p.m. In addition, a new guided class for knitters and crocheters will be offered beginning the first Monday of every month, meeting concurrently with the salon.

Attendance at the salon is free and on a drop-in basis, but advance registration is required for the workshops. To RSVP or just get information go to www.denverlibrary.org/fresh or call 720-865-1206.
Mondays, 5-7:30 p.m. Starts: April 27. Continues through Nov. 23, 2009
