The rivalry between the Red Riding Hoods and the Sugar Kill Gang comes to a head tonight at 6:30 p.m., when the two oldest roller derby teams in the state battle it out for the Rocky Mountain Roller Girls Home Team League Championships. The Hoods have a long history of being the dominant team in our league, says RMRG spokeswoman PJ Shields, aka Dangeous Leigh Azon. In the past, its been oversimplified as the hard-core skaters versus the nice girls, but this year I think it could go the other way. The Sugars desperately want this, and theyve got the strongest team theyve ever had.
Watch for She Who Cannot Be Named, a jammer for the Hoods who has been with the team since the leagues inception, skating against Sugars jammer Frida Beater: Both are members of the 5280 Fight Club, the RMRG all-stars squad that is currently ranked third nationally in the Womens Flat Track Derby Association. Next month theyll be back to skating on the same team, prepping for the WFTDA Western Regionals in Sacramento and, if all goes well, the National Championships in Chicago in November. But tonight? Its gonna be a battle.
Shields will be watching from the sidelines, since both the Sugars and the Hoods beat her team, Dooms Daisies. Join her at the Bladium, 2100 Central Park Boulevard in Stapleton. Admission is $15 for adults, free for kids twelve and under; for more information, go to www.rockymountainrollergirls.com.
