Life’s Shining Armor
“I’m not gonna lie about it,” Buntport Theater’s Brian Colonna says of his autobiographical play, A Knight to Remember: My Quest to Gallantly Recapture the Past. “I’ll just come out and say the conceit is that the other members of Buntport thought it was a bad idea, so they wouldn’t participate. So it’s mostly myself playing me. Erin [Rollman] is on stage as an actress, because she’s just happy to get the stage time. And Hannah [Duggan] is running tech — from her phone — and she only agreed to do it because I pay her.” There’s more: Colonna will be running the box office for his own show, and he had to change the ticket price, because his math-challenged fourth-grader’s soul made a mistake the first time. True, true and true? You’ll have to see the show to find out.
While there, you’ll learn that the other nemesis of Colonna’s inner fourth-grader was his teeth-straightening headgear, which he was forced to wear while his family was touring castles in Europe. He was obsessed with all the armor on display and thought knights were the ultimate in cool. There’s a princess, too, in a wrinkled school picture (he thinks her name was Danielle, and says, “There’s something about the picture that makes me think she’s the princess I never ended up with”). Throughout the play’s hour-and-then-some, Colonna’s knight-obsessed life will flash before your eyes from seven overhead projectors, while the action, which includes a self-knighting, unfolds on stage.
The point? “Anything is possible,” he notes. “We hold on to that for one second and try to believe it’s true.” That, and more than a few well-placed yuks.
A Knight to Remember opens tonight and runs through April 29 at Buntport Theater, 717 Lipan Street; for tickets (if Colonna can be trusted, they’re $15 — or $20 on opening and closing nights, which both include a reception), go to buntport.com or call 720-946-1388.
Thursdays-Saturdays, 8 p.m.; Sundays, 3 p.m.; Mon., April 29, 8 p.m. Starts: April 12. Continues through May 5, 2013
