The consumption of literature is often a solitary endeavor, so people don’t usually associate books with a night out on the town. But the creators of Stories on Stage believe in bringing the rhythm, imagination and drama of classic narratives into the medium of live performance. Tonight’s show — performed entirely by actor René Auberjonois (Boston Legal, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine) — brings a handful of clips from New Journalism icon Tom Wolfe’s Bonfire of the Vanities, Radical Chic and The Right Stuff into the eyes and ears of Denver lit fans.
“Wolfe’s beat is America, with all its foibles,” says playwright Judith Auberjonois, who adapted Wolfe’s work for the stage and is married to René. “I have chosen and extrapolated passages of the novels for their maximum entertainment value, keeping the audience appeal in mind. The pieces have an intelligence and depth that are pretty dazzling, no matter when they were originally written. Wolfe is better than mere topicality — and the verbal dexterity and virtuosity of René delivering those words seems to be a pretty optimal match, if I do say so myself.”
Big Bad Wolfe goes on twice today, at 1:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., at Su Teatro, 721 Santa Fe Drive; tickets are $28. For more information, visit storiesonstage.org.
