Earlier this year, Denver Zine Library co-founder Kelly Shortandqueer started an Indiegogo crowd-funding campaign to help him pay for “top surgery,” which is similar to a double mastectomy and the final stage of his transition from a woman to a man. Shortandqueer had also planned a benefit to help raise more money, since medical insurance coverage excludes this kind of trans-related procedure. Since the Indiegogo campaign was so successful, however, going well beyond its $5,000 goal, Shortandqueer has decided to give the proceeds from tonight’s benefit to two organizations that have always been there for him: the Denver Zine Library and the Colorado Anti-Violence Program.
"It's going to be sort of a celebration of community coming together -- that's the bigger picture," says Shortandqueer. "And, really, I just chose those two organizations because they're the ones I love and have supported me, and I'd like to support them."
A Celebration of Community will include music from DJ Stat, Boot & Rally, Charismatic Megafauna, and Bearsnail mini-pies from Maple Street Pie Company. There's a suggested donation of $5 to $10, and all proceeds will be split between the all-volunteer zine lending library and CAVP, an organization that works to eradicate violence in and against the LGBTQ community. Doors open at 6 p.m. at the Deer Pile, 206 East 13th Avenue. For more information, visit denverzinelibrary.org or coavp.org.
