Buntport Theaters Evan Weissman doesnt really want to tell you what Jugged Rabbit Stew, the companys last production of the season, is actually about. It just comes off as sounding so hokey and strange, he laments.
Another atypical Buntport musical inspired by the success of the troupes first one, a collaboration with composer Adam Stone that ended the season last year, Stew, as Weissman attempts to explain, is about a protagonist who is a magician not doing magic anymore because hes frustrated. He is the bunny rabbit who comes out of the hat, and the magician he works with is not actually magical, hes just a front. Other characters include an arm (right, to be exact) and an assistant who was cut in half and reattached to the wrong set of legs. Strange, indeed.
But strange works at Buntport. Its always hard for us to toot our own horn, because we write and perform all of our own work, Weissman admits. But with a musical, even if we end up writing a terrible play, you know the music is going to be really awesome because of Adam.
Stew will be served tonight at 8 p.m. and continues with performances Thursday through Saturday (and on selected Sundays) through June 19 at Buntport, 717 Lipan Street; for information and tickets, $13 to $16, go to www.buntport.com or call 720-946-1388.
Thursdays-Saturdays, 8 p.m.; Sun., June 6, 3 p.m.; Sun., June 13, 3 p.m. Starts: May 21. Continues through June 19, 2010
