Female bartenders deserve just as much credit as their male counterparts, insists Ivy Mix, who along with her partner, Lynnette Marrero, founded Speed Rack, a national women-only mixology battle that pits eight to sixteen maiden bar bosses from each city against one another for an opportunity to win a cocktail-centric trip to France.
"The cocktail industry has evolved into a bona fide career, but women aren't given the same opportunities as men, so Lynette and I launched Speed Rack to give female bartenders a platform to compete against each other and to make a name for themselves," says Mix, who's bringing the cross-country competition to Casselman's Bar and Venue. Several local bartending babes, including Amanda Olig (Osteria Marco), Amy Kempster (City O' City) and Diane Schwender (Gaetano's), will tussle in a series of judged speed-round eliminations until one girl saunters away with the title of Miss Denver Speed Rack and moves on to New York to shake and stir in the finals.
Tickets to the event -- one hundred percent of whose proceeds benefit breast cancer research -- are $20 each at the door and include access to the competition, food, and punch plied with alcohol. The fun begins at 1 p.m. at Casselman's, 2620 Walnut Street. For more information, go to www.speed-rack.com.
