Ten out of ten monkey’s-paw recipients agree: Wishes come with a steep price. The “magical girls” of the hit anime series Puella Magi Madoka Magica learn this lesson the hard way in an epic tale of sacrifice, friendship and unforeseen consequences. It begins when an odd little creature called Kyubey offers magical powers and a wish to a pair of young girls in exchange for their service battling evil witches. By story’s end, the very fate of the universe will be affected by the decisions they make in response to its offer.

“In the world of anime lovers, Madoka Magica is huge, [but] it’s not available on DVD [in the U.S.],” says Keith Garcia of the Denver Film Society. “We had the opportunity to show the two movies as a four-hour event, and we’re happy to bring it to Denver anime lovers for this one night only.”
The two films run back to back, with an intermission, starting at 7 p.m. at the Sie FilmCenter, 2501 East Colfax Avenue. Tickets are $18 to $20, and the first thirty people at the theater will received a limited-edition poster. For more info, visit www.denverfilm.org.
