A mash-up of theater, improvisation and film is an apt description of tonight’s Cult Following #3 presented by Off-Center@The Jones; co-director Allison Watrous dubs it an “improv cocktail.” The mostly unscripted show features six actors working off of five classic movie moments and a handful of plot lines to create a “live cinema” experience. No films are off limits, and this time around, Young Frankenstein and The Devil Wears Prada are just two big-screen favorites getting their due.

The night opens with three movie “trailers” written on the fly, followed by a 45-minute “feature film” that places the actors in a police-station setting. Some characters and relationships are recurring throughout the season, lending to an episodic feel to the show, but otherwise, the audience sees the making of a story as it happens. Adding to the improvisational vibe are cinematic prompts, wherein actors can call for an “action montage” or “3D moment,” bringing the show directly into the crowd.
Cult Following #3 goes down at the Jones Theatre, in the Denver Performing Arts Complex; doors open at 8 p.m., and the performance begins at 8:35. Tickets are $10 to $14 and can be purchased through www.denveroffcenter.org or by calling 303-893-4100.
