With six galleries, theres always something eye-catching and thought-provoking at MCA Denver, and tonight the museum will unveil two exhibits at the same time.
On the first floor, in the Photography Gallery, is Kevin OConnell, a show curated by former MCA staffer John Grant. OConnell is a well-known Colorado photographer who for the past twenty years has focused on the local landscape. In this new group of large color photos, OConnell focuses on the states energy industry, placing utilitarian structures at the center of his views of nature. (Additional images from this same series are currently on display in another OConnell solo at Robischon Gallery.)
Also opening is Arlene Shechet, on view in the second-floor Paper Works Gallery. This solo was already in the MCA pipeline before Adam Lerner came on as director a few months ago, and with no other curatorial help left on staff, he took on the organization of it himself. In these works, Shechet, a New Yorker, has cast paper on the surface of water and then infused it with references to the landscape in natural colors, predominantly blues and browns.
A members-only preview gets under way at 6 p.m. at MCA Denver, 1485 Delgany Street, and the reception opens to the public from 7 to 9 p.m. For details, call 303-298-7554 or go to www.mcadenver.org.
