Anyone whos ever had any question about whether immigrants are taking our jobs would do well to step into an immigrants shoes, at least in the metaphorical sense. Just such a learning experience can be found in the pages of Jean Kwoks semi-autobiographical novel, Girl in Translation, the sharp-eyed tale of a Chinese-American immigrant girl from Hong Kong who toils after school in a Chinatown sweatshop at her mothers side, seesawing back and forth between worlds both harsh and full of promise. Like Kwok herself, the girl eventually finds footing, ending up in the Ivy League in a story that simply demands respect. The author will read from and sign copies of Girl tonight at 7:30 p.m. at the Tattered Cover, 2526 East Colfax Avenue; get details at www.tatteredcover.com or call 303-322-7727.
