On the Road
Now that food trucks have become a permanent part of the landscape, are you ready for rolling boutiques? Denver is popping up with more than one of these retailers on wheels this summer, including Brick & Mortar General Store, the design-savvy entrepreneurial venture of business partners Tran Wills and Allison Shaw. Brick & Mortar will open its adorable custom-painted trailer door to the public beginning today, proffering a curated selection of well-designed wares in parking lots and street corners all over town. It’s a creative outlet for Wills and Shaw, with a low overhead and an inventory of artist prints, jewelry, edibles, home goods, toys and slick-but-trendy toiletries.
“We really do have something for everyone, including super-cheap things that are also gorgeous,” Wills says, noting that when shopping in boutiques in other cities, she often leaves empty-handed because of the high prices. “It makes me sad. I want to help and buy things made locally, but I can’t.”
The low overhead of Brick & Mortar allows her to be generous with consigned suppliers, offering them a 75 percent profit. She plans to feature guest pop-ups at most stops and, later in the summer, a mobile meet-up event with other vendors.
Brick & Mortar’s two-day grand opening begins today from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Crema Coffee House, 2862 Larimer Street; the focus will be on Father’s Day, with Beard Buddy Beard Wash, antiqued pocket flasks, smart men’s caps by Kittie Mae Millinery and leather keychains with serious hardware among the items for sale; guest TaRosa Jacobs of Wishlist Vintage will be on the premises with such finds as one-of-a-kind ties and vintage French men’s robes.
