On Your Toes
Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo is more than just men in tights: It’s a performance of camp that requires expert precision. Begun in 1974 as a parody of the sometimes stuffy dance form, the Trocks have since evolved, bringing dance to a new level with expert elements of comedy, drama and, of course, the skillful, demanding work that is ballet en pointe.
The troupe, which consists of conservatory-trained dancers in drag interpreting classics such as The Nutcracker and Swan Lake, will stop in Colorado for the first time since a sold-out 2008 show. The performance is part of the Newman Center for the Performing Arts’ annual schedule, a diverse lineup that includes comedians, musicians and other artists from around the globe. “We pride ourselves on being very eclectic and bringing in a wide range of disciplines,” says the venue’s Natalie Raborn. “The bottom line is, these guys are just very entertaining, and our goal is to entertain people.”
Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo begins at 7:30 p.m. in Gates Concert Hall at the Newman Center, 2344 East Iliff Avenue. Tickets are $23 to $70 and can be purchased at newmancenterpresents.com or by calling 303-871-6507.
