Beginning today, the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center will tell the next chapter in that story, hosting a display of more than seventy conceptual and minimalist works from the Vogel Collection that were awarded to the museum in 2008. The gift, part of the collection's Fifty Works for Fifty States program and the only award made in Colorado, included just the kind of treasure that museum director Blake Milteer was looking for.
"In continuing to build our collection, I look for things that fill in historical gaps, so we can have the best range of narratives possible in our galleries," Milteer says. "Prior to receiving this gift, we were not terribly strong in late-20th-century conceptual and minimalist art." He's especially excited to have received works by Richard Tuttle and 2011 National Medal of Arts winner Will Barnet, as well as a ceramic bust by Michael Lucero, among many others.
50 X 50: The Herbert and Dorothy Vogel Collection will continue through August 11 at the CSFAC, 30 West Dale Street in Colorado Springs; upcoming events will include screenings of Herb and Dorothy and another film documenting the dissemination of work to each of the fifty states.
