Pale Ale of the Apes
Last years Denver Gorilla Run aped its way into the Guinness Book of World Records with 1,061 costumed runners going bananas through the streets of Denver. And this year, the Wynkoop Brewing Company, where the 5.6K race starts and finishes, will stoke the primal urges of local primates with a new beer: Silverback Pale Ale. The brewery donates 50 percent of its profits from the beer to the Littleton-based Mountain Gorilla Conservation Fund, as it has done in the past with other beers. The organization, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary, is involved in anti-poaching activities, veterinary medicine, and education efforts in Rwanda, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Weve been taking the lead to protect the gorillas ever since Dian Fosseys murder in 1985, says Frank Keesling, MGCF vice president. Im pleased to tell you that the gorillas are doing better than Fossey might have ever imagined they would be.
The $99.95 registration (or a $50 fee for kids and returning gorillas) includes a gorilla costume, yours to keep. The race starts at 11 a.m. at the Wynkoop, 1634 18th Street. Were not gonna run out of gorilla suits, I can guarantee you that, Keesling says. Ive got plenty of fur to go around.
