When the organizers behind the annual Rocky Mountain Book & Paper Fair wanted to stir things up for the 2010 edition, they knew just who to call: Dana Cain, event mistress extraordinaire. Im bringing the party to Friday night, Cain says. The Book & Paper Fair has always had a launch party, but this time there will be live jazz, a wine tasting and a challenge panel wherein panelists (and audience members) will debate among themselves: Who was the greatest author of the twentieth century? Three panelists will declaim, after which the audience can assert opinions via applause or by challenging any one of the panelists for his or her seat by lauding an alternative author. At the end of the night, one writer will reign supreme. The gala runs from 5 to 9 p.m. tonight and costs $10 (but includes re-admission for tomorrows fair).
The fair itself will offer dozens of vendors exhibiting vintage paper goods, plus programming on Colorado history through vintage photography, the evolution of the literary vampire, a trivia challenge and a discussion of postcards and genealogy. The fair runs Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and admission is $5; all events take place at the Denver Merchandise Mart, 451 East 58th Avenue. Visit www.rmaba.org.
Fri., Aug. 6, 5-9 p.m.; Sat., Aug. 7, 10 a.m.-5 p.m., 2010
