Khyentse James has put on a lot of stellar historical events, from the 1940s WWII Era Ball to tonight’s 1950s Tiki Ball and pool party, which celebrates all things tiki and exotica. And she says there’s just something special about the end-of-summer island-paradise landscape she creates, with Hollywood-quality props, mermaids, fire dancers and a Samoan chief or two thrown into the mix. “This party is just so magical, with mermaids and Elvis,” says James, “and the costumes people wear are on another level.”
There’s a second stage this year, to accommodate twice the numbers of acts and to let pool-dippers enjoy live entertainment while they wash off the dust of summer, as well as a cocktail symposium, giant palm trees, and decor inspired by exotica paintings. “We’re really going crazy with the decorating this year,” James says, “and the musical vibe is more upbeat. Last year we did a lounge, which was awesome, but we wanted people to dance, and you can’t really dance to exotica.” So she’s brought in a hula-billy (tiki rockabilly) band, along with the Aquasonics and the Afro-Cuban Orchestra, to spice things up.
Bid farewell to summer the tiki way from 4 p.m. to 1 a.m. at the Millennium Harvest House Outdoor Pavilion and Pool on Boulder Creek, 1345 28th Street in Boulder. Tickets are $35 for general admission; visit voodooisland.org.
