REC and Roll With Zombies
Mash up the best bits of Night of the Living Dead, The Exorcist and Aliens, set the whole thing in a claustrophobic old-world apartment building, unfurl it all at a breakneck pace, and youd be close to the perfect zombie-movie mayhem that is REC 2. This brilliant sequel to REC (which was sadly overlooked in the U.S. in favor of promoting its American remake, Quarantine) picks up moments after that movie left off and ups the ante in almost every possible way.
The film opens on a SWAT team preparing to enter a quarantined building to investigate a deadly zombie plague. From there it reveals its many surprises in successive layers, each more terrifying than the last. Co-directors Jaume Balagueró and Paco Plaza have delivered not only one of the freshest twists on the zombie genre in years, but also one of the most genuinely frightening movies ever. Whether or not youre already a fan of its predecessor, REC 2 is an absolute must-see for horror aficionados of all stripes.
It screens tonight and tomorrow at midnight at the Esquire Theatre, 590 Downing Street. Tickets are $7.25; to purchase yours, visit www.landmarktheatres.com or call 303-733-9939.
Sat., July 17, midnight; Sun., July 18, midnight, 2010
