There are already mammoths and mastodons on display at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science, but as paleontology curator Joe Sertich points out, “Those are just bones. They don’t really tell the whole story about elephants.”

That’s what Mammoths and Mastodons: Titans of the Ice Age is for. “This exhibit helps you get really close to the first elephants and get a good understanding of every aspect of their biology,” Sertich explains, “like how they use their trunks and their tusks, and the herd structure.”

Attendees can get up close and personal with touch-friendly sculptures of mammoths and mastodons from throughout the ages.

Mammoths and Mastodons also marks the first time that the now-famous Snowmass fossils — which include more than 5,000 mastodon bones, plus more Colorado fossils — will be included in an exhibit rather than at a special event.

The new display opens today and runs through May 27 at the museum, 2001 Colorado Boulevard; time-specific tickets are $5 to $23 and include general museum admission. For information, call 303-370-6000 or visit www.dmns.org/mammoths-and-mastodons.
