Last year, Denver's MileHiCon ran concurrently with the World Science Fiction Convention, one of the biggest and longest-running events of its kind. During the 41st annual installment of MileHiCon this weekend, however, things will be a bit quieter but that doesn't mean the convention will be short of glorious, geeky excitement.
Celebrating everything that's great about science fiction and fantasy in all its various media, it boasts guests of honor Nancy Kress and Barbary Hambly, two veteran authors of the genre, as well as toastmaster Brandon Sanderson, the wunderkind novelist who has been chosen to finish the late Rob Jordan's fantasy opus, The Wheel of Time. Also appearing will be plenty of homegrown talent, including Colorado-based writers such as Warren Hammond, Carrie Vaughn and hot science-fiction up-and-comer Paolo Bacigalupi. As always, there will be contests, readings, gaming, vendors and screenings galore including a weekend-long celebration of the work of Joss Whedon that includes a Friday-night showing of Dr. Horrible's Singalong Blog and a real singalong Saturday night with the infamous musical Buffy episode, "Once More, With Feeling." Dressing up like a character from Firefly isn't mandatory, but it sure wouldn't hurt.
MileHiCon 41 will take place today through Sunday at the Denver Tech Center's Hyatt Regency Hotel, at 7800 East Tufts Avenue. Admission is $18 for Friday, $22 for Saturday, $20 for Sunday, or $42 for all three days. For registration and info, visit www.milehicon.org.
