Not every dog show is a collection of prancing, pampered purebreds being guided around a circle. Starting today and running through September 7, you can catch a different kind of dog showing off in the 22nd annual Meeker Classic Sheepdog Championship Trials. Forget the ribbons and shampoo these dogs (border collies, for the most part) will use their instincts and training to do what sheepdogs are born to do: locate and herd sheep through rough terrain. Its an exciting event for anyone who loves dogs or the ranching life, with 124 teams vying for more than $20,000 in prizes.
Alongside the main draw, there will be a variety of activities steeped in Colorados rich ranching/pioneer history, from saddle-making and weaving demonstrations to a petting farm, seminars on dog handling and an art contest focusing on sheepdogs and the event. Youll also find vendors selling authentic handmade crafts; plenty of food including pancake breakfasts and BBQs; and horsedrawn-carriage rides from downtown Meeker.
Tickets for the five-day festival are $30 for adults, $15 for kids eight to sixteen; single-day passes are $10 for adults and $5 for kids. Leave the pets at home, but bring sunblock, lawn chairs and binoculars to make sure you dont miss a moment of the action.
