You’ve seen one Nutcracker, you’ve seen them all? Not quite, says the Colorado Ballet’s Sanya Andersen-Vie, who promises that theirs is not only the most classic, crowd-pleasing rendition around, but it’s also one of the few in the area to feature a live orchestra performing Tchaikovsky’s familiar and signature tunes. “We have 45 members of the Colorado Symphony in the pit for every performance,” she rightfully brags. It’s also big and beautiful, with a huge cast of professional and student dancers and more than 250 stunning costumes. And one more thing: The show, which is recommended for ages five and up, runs less than two hours (including intermission). That comes in handy when your little sugar plum fairies and tin soldiers begin to fidget, do the bathroom dance and turn somersaults under their seats.
In short, the Colorado Ballet’s The Nutcracker, which opens today at 2 and 7:30 p.m. at the Ellie Caulkins Opera House in the Denver Performing Arts Complex for a run through December 28, is the complete package. Andersen-Vie warns that tickets, ranging in price from $25 to $155, go fast, so it’s best to act quickly; visit coloradoballet.org or call 303-837-8888.
