Showga You Care

Showga — a form of yoga practiced to different musical styles — has been shifting and changing its format since originator Piper Rose conceptualized it; she was directly inspired by Astral Glamour’s Ester Hernandez (who’ll be one of many musicians playing the upcoming Showga series). “She’s ethereal and otherworldly and just musically haunting,” Rose says, “and in my personal practice at home, sometimes I would put her CD in and move into these waves of her specific expression, because when you add different variables, it shifts.”

Astral Glamour and Hernandez sat in on several Showga incarnations to fundraise for various community efforts, and then a woman in Oakland heard about Showga and decided to do it as a series. Rose flew out to Oakland and taught one of those Showga classes and decided to curate a series herself. “Each will offer a different flavor, a different taste, to move through your body — so not just this experience of atypical yoga music, but really diversifying the vibrational field and seeing what it changes in the practice.”

The class will run in a set sequence every week so regular attendees will be able to focus on the sounds while they move through the movements.

Showga will take place every Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at the Mercury Cafe, 2199 California Street, through November 17; admission is by anonymous donation, and proceeds will benefit the Denver Yoga Co-Op, which is in the process of opening a donation-only yoga studio. For information, visit, e-mail or call 720-364-9452.
Saturdays, 10:30 a.m. Starts: Oct. 13. Continues through Nov. 17, 2012
