The Rocky Mountain Rollergirls' 5280 Fight Club -- defending Women's Flat Track Roller Derby Association national champions and currently ranked number two in the nation, is busy training for the Bridgetown Brawl West Region Playoffs later this month in Portland, Oregon. But first there's a more local score to settle: Tonight at 7 p.m., the RMRG Contenders (the league's B-squad) will take on the Choice City Rebels All-Stars from Fort Collins at the Fillmore Auditorium, 1510 Clarkson Street. You can get tickets to the match at www.rockymountainrollergirls.com, and it promises to be a bruiser.
"In-state rivalries are the best, because fans from both sides are out in force supporting their teams," says RMRG spokeswoman PJ Shields, aka Dangerous Leigh A'zon. "The Contenders are an incredible B-squad, and they're a very strong, intimidating team. These are the skaters who are in close contention for positions on the 5280 Fight Club; in most other leagues they would be the A-squad and, in fact, they'll be taking on the Choice City A-squad, also an incredible team, in this bout."
Outside the state, she notes, Colorado is now known worldwide as a roller-derby threat: In addition to the team's 2010 Hydra Trophy (roller derby's equivalent of the Stanley Cup), RMRG can now boast that it's sending five of its star skaters (along with two skaters from the Denver Roller Dolls) to represent Team USA in the first-ever Roller Derby World Cup in Toronto this December. "Fully a quarter of the Team USA skaters -- seven out of 28 -- are from Colorado," Shields says.
