Look for delightfully retro nods to the 100-year history of “Ski Town, USA” as Steamboat Ski Resort opens its fiftieth-anniversary season today by selling heavily discounted lift tickets to benefit the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club scholarship program for young skiers and snowboarders.

“We’re really looking forward to a couple of big birthday parties this season,” says resort spokeswoman Loryn Kasten. “In addition to the opening-day celebration, we’ll have the Dirty Dozen Brass Band playing a free concert on Saturday, November 24, to kick off our 50 Days of Giveaways as we count down to our official birthday party on January 12.”

And don’t miss the explosive tribute to Carl Howelsen, the man who started it all, when the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club marks its hundredth-anniversary Winter Carnival, February 8-12. “We weren’t able to do our traditional Fourth of July fireworks this year because of the wildfires, so we’ve got quite a stockpile now,” says Kasten. “This year’s Winter Carnival display is going to be one to remember for another century.”
