It's that time again -- time for teams of four people from around the world to pool their resources and prepare to attack a twelve-foot-tall, twenty-ton block of machine-made snow. Their mission? To change the block into a work of art in a mere five days, using only their ingenuity and hand tools -- no chainsaws allowed. The result is an array of more than a dozen amazing snow sculptures that will remain on display through February 4, weather permitting.
This year's Budweiser Select International Snow Sculpture Championships is the eighteenth annual event; today is the second day of sculpting, so viewers will just begin to see the finished product taking shape in the giant blocks of snow. Sculpting ends on January 27, when a panel of artists and patrons of the arts will present awards. Head for the high country! The sculptures are taking form at the Riverwalk Center in Breckenridge; visit www.gobreck.com or call 1-800-936-5575.
