Theres something charming, but a little bit off, about Songs of Meat & Cake, a theatrical song cycle that treats its subjects both literally and metaphorically. Sometimes giddy, sometimes serious, the cabaret was concocted by collaborating Boulder ensembles Square Product Theatre and Zen Cabaret. It is about sustenance, both physical and psychic, and its songs mostly originals, some doctored covers, ranging from a version of Anne Waldmans poem Skin / Meat / BONES to a song about meatloaf are inspired by lifes extremes: the meat and cake of it all.
Its essentially about a menagerie of characters who come together to preach the gospel of meat and cake to the audience, says Square Products Emily K. Harrison, who joined forces with fellow performers Bobby Dartt and Nina Rolle on the project. The characters do this because they are hungry, and they will not be allowed to eat unless they properly convey this information to the audience. Theres also a little hint that the audience could become prey. The theme, hatched during a conversation between Harrison and Rolle over lunch (Rolle asked Harrison if she ever ate salad, and she replied that she only ate meat and cake), conjures everything from raw consumption to meeting ones anxieties face to face and swallowing them whole.
