Last years inaugural Bring It On Bowling Ball was a rousing success, but Denvers high-flying Flobots think the event, a fundraiser for youth-directed Art to Action programs sponsored by the bands non-profit Flobots.org, is going to be even better this year. The Flobots will take on Rise Against at the 2010 celebrity tournament; party-goers are invited to participate either by putting together a team or just by drinking in the good times.
We were really excited about the last one, but this time around its going to be more fun, with a greater sense of what were doing and of how people being there helps contribute to our making things happen, says Flobot Stephen Brackett, aka Brer Rabbit. Its one thing to make a contribution. We want to show people that we respect that contribution, and the way to show that is to give them a good time. Its the same model we use for our shows. We want to make sure theyre worth every cent and then some.
Theyll do that by ensuring that bowling is not the only focus. This one will almost be like a circus. We plan to have a frenzy of other activities, Brackett says. If youre not bowling on a team but youre still there, we want to make sure you have an amazing time. Last year, we thought there was too much watching of bowling, because the bowling, as riveting as it is, isnt enough. There are other things we might have, like maybe a chance to beat the pants off Matt Morris at Twister or a celebrity round of Rock Band, where you could go up against the guys in Rise Against.
Theyre shooting to raise $50,000 which will fund a full year of Art to Action activities through team registration fees of $1,000 and up, as well as the regular admission of $100 for those watching the action. And the bowling should be no less intense: We destroyed the Fray last year, Brackett boasts. But this year its going to be closer. As it turns out, a couple of the guys in Rise Against are avid bowlers who own their own balls and even play in leagues. I think the level of smack talk will be incredibly high this year, just to make up for our lack of talent, he admits.
The Bring It On Bowling Ball starts at 6 p.m. today at Lucky Strike Lanes in Belmar, 414 South Teller Street in Lakewood; for more information, visit www.flobots.org.
