When it comes time to plan a new production of Stories on Stage, creative director Anthony Powell is sometimes lucky enough to have his audience do the work for him. “For How Does Your Garden Grow?, one of our subscribers just said, ‘You should do a garden show — and here’s a book of stories!’ I dove into the stories, and the stuff was just wonderful.
“There’s so much good stuff out there that I sometimes get immobilized, like a rabbit just sitting there quivering because I can’t possibly read it all,” he adds. In this case, the combination of stories and readers is sure to make How Does Your Garden Grow? a seasonal winner for Stories on Stage. “There’s a really romantic story; there’s some funny stuff; there’s one about a contract killer; and we’re doing some poems. It’s just kind of a spring thing. And I’ve got to say, I’m a believer.”
One of the highlights will be Kathleen Chalfant (fresh off a role on House of Cards) reading “The Lady Gardener.” “I think if I hadn’t had her, I might have picked another story,” Powell admits.
Catch Stories on Stage today at 1:30 and 6:30 p.m. at Su Teatro, 721 Santa Fe Drive, with milk and cookies following the readings. Admission is $28 for adults and $15 for students, and scholarships are available. Call 303-494-0523 or visit storiesonstage.org.
