In the waning days of 2011, in the midst of holiday-season cheer, many folks turn to the movies -- December blockbusters, to be sure, but also Oscar contenders. For Academy Award geeks, this is the season to both catch up with past and last-minutes entrants and look ahead, and if you're lucky enough to be passing through Aspen, you might even have a chance to do it all during the twentieth annual Aspen Film Academy Screenings, which continue with two screenings on most nights through New Year's Day.
It's also a chance to hobnob with the famous, many of whom traditionally attend the screenings -- while on vacation -- as voting members of the academy doing their duty. But anyone can go, and speaking of blockbusters, this slate is top-heavy with them: Catch Spielberg's War Horse; the John La Carre thriller Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy; the star-studded crime drama Rampart; and the film adaptation of Jonathan Safran Foer's Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, to name just a few. See all screenings at the Harris Concert Hall, 960 North Third Street in Aspen; for a complete schedule and tickets, visit www.aspenfilm.org or call 970-925-6882.
