For the first time ever, May the Fourth — aka Star Wars Day — falls on the same weekend as the annual StarFest convention, which is pulling out all the stops this year. “As far as I know, StarFest is the biggest Star Wars Day celebration between the two coasts,” says Dana Cain, the local con’s marketing director. “We’ve got everything from the Jar Jar dunk tank on down to the Miss Empire pageant.” There will also be Star Wars guests such as Billy Dee Williams (Lando Calrissian in The Empire Strikes Back) and Sam Witwer, voice of Darth Maul and other characters on The Clone Wars cartoon series and games.

Outside of the Star Wars world, the con contains multiple cons-within-a-con, such as the DoctorWhoFest, HorrorFest and ComicFest, to name a few, and non-Star Wars guests such as Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad, Revolution) and Nichelle Nichols (Star Trek: TOS and films). Throw in a massive costume contest, a dealers’ room and enough geeky panels and activities to run you ragged all week-end, and it’s no wonder Cain is billing the event as the “ultimate geekend.”
The con runs today through Sunday at the Marriott Denver Tech Center, 4900 South Syracuse Street, and the Hilton Garden Inn, 7675 East Union Avenue. Three-day passes start at $55 ($24 for kids ages six to ten) in advance, with single-day and special-event passes also available.
