Stay Young at Nan Desu Kan

This year marks sweet sixteen for Nan Desu Kan, the region’s premier anime convention, but as anyone who’s attended any of the previous fifteen years knows, the con is a lot more than just anime: It’s a celebration of a wide swath of Japanese pop culture. The latest addition to the mix is a fitting one for this particular birthday. “This year, what’s new to us is fashion; we’ve never really dabbled in it before,” says Nan Desu Kan public-relations director A. Jinnie McManus. “This year, for the first time, we’re going to have a Lolita Boutique. We want our attendees to see what real Lolita really is.”

As usual, the weekend will be jam-packed with guests from the worlds of anime and manga, including voice actors, artists and industry leaders such as Masao Maruyama, co-founder of Studio Madhouse. Throw in a concert, a Masquerave, several cosplay contests, a bustling dealer’s room, and more screenings and panels than you could possibly attend, and you’re looking at an intense weekend of Japan-centric fun.

The con starts at 2 p.m. today and runs through Sunday at the Marriott DTC, 4900 South Syracuse Street. Tickets are $30 for a day pass, $50 for the entire weekend, and all ages are welcome. For more info, including a full lineup and schedule, visit
