With a French name, it's only fitting that Denver's Amélie advertising company would have a fondness for food. So when charged with planning a five-year anniversary celebration, Anita Ashfield-Salter thought cupcakes. She wanted to pull together Denver's best pastry chefs to generate the same kind of trendy cupcake buzz happening on the east and west coasts, but she quickly realized that the treats were already hot in Denver, with three bakeries Bites Creative Cupcakes, Lovely Confections and Happy Cakes Bakeshop dedicated exclusively to the art of the mini-sweet. "I think it plays back to your youth," Ashfield-Salter says of the cupcake's rebirth.
The three bakeries will join nine others at the Trendy Cupcake Sale from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. today in the lobby at 1670 Broadway. All proceeds benefit Share our Strength's Operation Frontline Colorado, a non-profit nutrition education program. Yes, Ashfield-Salter sees some irony in using cupcakes to fund a program that promotes nutrition so a healthy cupcake recipe will be given out with each sale ($4 per cupcake or 4 for $15).
