Breaking out of consignment-shop confinement, tonight’s Holiday Fashion Swap aims to capitalize on recycled fashion’s burgeoning popularity. This organized clothing-trade party invites all you frugal fashionistas to bring a bag of up-to-date, gently used and seasonally appropriate attire to exchange for a bag of new-to-you goods in a pop-up boutique environment.
Beginning at 5:30 p.m., swappers can drop off clothing to be traded, enjoy a beverage and try on potential apparel. It’s also a good time to lay out a plan of attack. (The swap can get pretty competitive, as participants have plenty of time to eye choice goods before the trading begins.) At 7 p.m., a pre-swap fashion show will highlight trade-ready looks, while local designers, makeup artists and stylists like Megan Kaltenbach Designs, The Bodacious Beauty, Stella & Dot and EcoSalon showcase their stuff at pop-up shops.
“I love the idea of reducing your fashion footprint,” says co-organizer Stacey Johnson. “We don’t really talk about how silly it is always to buy new, new, new.” But used doesn’t mean tattered: Fashion interns working the clothing intake are only looking for current pieces with no visible signs of wear and tear.
The awap takes place tonight at Cantina Laredo in Boulder, 1680 29th Street, and tomorrow at Cantina Laredo in the Streets at SouthGlenn, 6851 South Gaylord Street in Centennial. Tickets are $20 in advance at holidayfashionswap.eventbrite.com, or $25 at the door; space is limited, so advance purchase is recommended. A portion of each night’s proceeds will go to non-profit mentoring pro-gram Smart-Girl Inc.
