We all know that gingerbread tastes good but how well would your family recipe support a bucket full of sand? That's the question behind today's Gingerbread Bridge Competition, at which engineering and architectural firms battle it out for the title of best (if not most delicious) bridge.
Over the years, creator Logan Miller has changed the events requirements to make the competition more challenging. "You should design a bridge based off things that you know work, like bridges in real life," he notes. "And baking is pretty important as well, to have the proper materials to make a strong bridge." Thats because all the materials in the entries must be edible, so the bridges are constructed with gingerbread, frosting and, occasionally, candy or licorice cables. Miller and his cohorts then hang a bucket from the middle of each entry and fill the bucket with sand until the bridge breaks; the structure that lasts the longest wins.
