The Wonderful World of Terrible
At the intersection where the ridiculous meets the sublime, where crappy B-media shlock becomes so awful it turns awesome, at that intersection resides Everything Is Terrible, a website run by a consortium of secretive nerds who cull the worst of our past culture from old VHS tapes and turn it into something beautiful. They do it every day on the site, and once they even made a movie (called, fittingly, Everything is Terrible: The Movie). Now theyre doing it again.
The first movie was about fifty minutes, and they just took all this random old footage and, like, connected it, explains Keith Garcia, director of programming at Starz FilmCenter, where the sequel, 2Everything 2Terrible II: Tokyo Drift, screens tonight. I like to say they poetically edit.
But the screening is not just a showing of a work in progress (the film isnt quite finished, Garcia admits). Its a full-on gala, featuring the creators themselves. They put on a costumed and choreographed, strobe-lit show beforehand, Garcia says.
The fun begins tonight at 8:30 p.m. at Starz, in the Tivoli building on the Auraria campus. Tickets are $12; for more information, visit www.denverfilm.org or call 303-820-3456.
