What do you get when you combine High School Musical and Bring It On, minus the unhealthy levels of raging teenage hormones? The Rocky Mountain Theatre Association's Festivention, an annual convention of theater groups from Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming and Utah. This year's event, which begins today in Lakewood, will be fun for thespians and non-thespians alike, says Colorado RMTA state representative Lorraine Scott: "It's a great way to keep on top of new, exciting events that are taking place in theater."
To get into Festivention, you can purchase an RMTA membership for $25, plus either $25 for a one-day pass or $55 for the entire four-day event (or $45 with a student ID). That's a good deal, considering you'll be enjoying some of the most exciting theater around. During the day, enjoy seminars and feisty theatrical competitions like the Tech Olympics, where stagecraft experts battle over who's the best at lighting, scenery and costuming at Red Rocks Community College, 13300 West Sixth Avenue in Lakewood. Then, at 7:30 p.m. each night at the Lakewood Cultural Center, 470 South Allison Parkway, watch some of the best theatrical productions in the region, such as the thought-provoking Speak Truth to Power, which hits the stage on Thursday night. It should be a blast; just don't expect Zac Efron. For information, go to www.rmta.net or call 303-914-6458.
