Sure, you could stay home, get snockered and burn off your eyebrows lighting fireworks this New Year's Eve, or you could hear some naughty poetry and watch belly dancers in steampunk gear. The Mercury Cafe, home of local booze, urban-hippie decor and a selection of vegetarian dishes that even carnivores can appreciate, will also be home to the sixteenth annual Erotic Poetry Festival from 7 to 9 p.m. For a measly $6 -- find another event for this price downtown on this night of nights, we dare ya -- you can watch selected poets read "exquisite, sexy, hilarious and poignant" poetry, according to Mercury chef and owner Marilyn Megenity. And the difference between steampunk belly dancers and regular ones? "Attitude, fashion and costumes designed by ArtsMyths," says Megenity. We're not certain what parts of the costumes the antique watch fobs will be attached to, but it might be worth finding out.

The Erotic Poetry Festival will be held in the dance hall at the Merc, 2199 California Street. For more information, call 303-294-9258.
Sat., Dec. 31, 7-9 p.m., 2011
