Top of the Town
Curious Theatre Company artistic director Chip Walton stole the idea, but give him a break: The Curious fundraiser Denver Stories is based on a similar event mounted at an independent theater in Atlanta, but the results are purely Denver-centric and amount to another well-deserved feather in Walton's already heavily plumed creative cap. A compendium of four hilarious short plays is based on the lives of handpicked local celebs (and Curious friends) Westword Best Socialite Holly Kylberg, runner and former Denver first lady Ellen Hart Peña, restaurateurs Mel and Janie Master, and developer Mickey Zeppelin and artist Susan Wick. The benefit promises to be long on fun, imaginative auction packages and terrific wine and eats (served courtesy of the Masters and Mel's Restaurant and Bar).
"All these personalities are a part of the fabric of Denver culture, with interesting Denver stories to tell," says Walton. Guests will not only get an inside peek at some of the town's rich, speedy, epicurean, visionary, bohemian and famous lives, they'll also have an opportunity to take a little piece of them home, for a price. Among the items to be auctioned are a pair of Manolos from Kylberg and a sporty pair of Mizunos from Peña; a party for fifty at Zeppelin's new design complex, Taxi; a piece from Wick's art collection; and a tasting tour for four with Mel's toque Tyler Wiard. Smashing!
Denver Stories begins at 6 p.m. at the Acoma Center, 1080 Acoma Street; for tickets, $55 each or $100 per couple (the pricier $250 patron admission for two, also available, includes preferred seating, a signed script and a gift bag), call 303-562-3333.
