As the Aurora Cultural Arts District continues to take strides in its bid to shape a vital city center, ACAD director Tracy Weil and staff find new ways to draw attention to downtown Aurora’s eclectic cultural community. The latest event, tonight’s Poetry@Play, will celebrate wordsmiths and artists alike with two public readings of original poems by featured artists and open-call poets, as well as a poetry-inspired art exhibit as a backdrop.
The evening gets under way with a first set of readings and an opening reception for Poetry & Art at ACAD Gallery and Studios, 1400 Dallas Street in Aurora, and continues with more readings and art nearby at the Collection, 9801 East Colfax Avenue. “We’re excited for the first big poetry event in the Aurora Cultural Arts District,” Weil says. “And we really hope it catches on and becomes a signature event for the district each fall. Featured poets include Suzy Q Smith, Micheal Levell, Wayne Gilbert and others.”
Catch the first set from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. (with beer from Aurora’s new Mu Brewery) and the chaser from 9 to 11 p.m. Admission is free. Find details at auroraartsdistrict.com.
